One of the greatest things about being an entrepreneur is the flexibility. You can choose when, how, and where you work. Sometimes, though, all of those options can get overwhelming. If you have several coworking spaces near you, how do you choose a coworking space that’s right for you?

There’s no single right answer, but there are several factors you should consider when you choose a coworking space.

1. How many amenities are too many?

Fancy amenities are all the rage in coworking spaces. Some include indoor climbing walls, beer on tap, or calligraphy classes, all in an effort to stand out from the crowd. The question is, what amenities do you really need? If you think you’ll actually use that ping-pong table, great. But if you have no intention of picking up a paddle, do you really want to pay extra for the privilege? And, let’s be honest: over-the-top amenities are going to distract you from getting work done and isn’t that why you choose a coworking space…to work?

2. How much does it cost?

Coworking spaces with trendy amenities tend to cost more than their business-focused counterparts. Consider what you’re willing to pay for and choose a coworking space that fits your budget and your needs. Be careful about calculating cost. Not all coworking spaces have transparent pricing. Make sure you know exactly what your coworking fee includes. Will you have to pay extra for coffee or parking?

3. Where will you park?

When it comes to coworking spaces, it’s not just the inside that counts. How convenient is the parking? Will you need to fight heavy traffic or seasonal tourists for a space close to where you’ll be working? Or will you have to walk several blocks hauling your laptop/tablet to get there? Is there a dedicated parking area? Do you have to pay for it? You don’t want to spend money on a coworking space only to not use it because getting there is inconvenient.

4. What kind of community do you want?

It seems that every coworking space brags about their amazing community. The question is, how much community are you looking for? Are you looking for a supportive group of fellow entrepreneurs who solve each other’s problems and collaborate on work, or do you really just want a quiet place with good wifi and free coffee?
