You probably know there are dozens of programs out there to help veterans transition out of the military and find employment. But what if you want to set up your own business? You wouldn’t be alone; 2.52 million businesses in the United States are majority-owned by veterans. Still, it’s sometimes challenging to find help to start your business as a veteran. That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of business resources for veterans in Hampton Roads and beyond.
Hampton Roads Veterans Business Outreach Center
The VBOC provides a whole portfolio of business resources for veterans in Hampton Roads, as well as for National Guard Members, reservists, and transitioning service members. Services are offered free of charge. They include an entrepreneurial training program run by the U.S. Small Business Administration, business counseling services, workshops, networking opportunities, and training events.
Transition365
Army Veteran Nyota Gordon helps military veterans transition from active duty to business leadership. Her high-energy, no-nonsense approach is exactly what you need to fill the gaps in TAP. Transition365 works with veterans and leaders of veterans across the country to offer bulletproof strategies that help them thrive in business and beyond.
Patriot Boot Camp
Based in Boulder, Colorado, Patriot Boot Camp is a non-profit offering mentoring, education, and community support to veterans, military members, and their spouses as they create, innovate, and build businesses. They offer in-person 3-day boot camps (online at the moment) as well as lunch and learn webinars.
Veteran-Owned Small Business Program
You can register your business through the Vets First Verification program to qualify for advantages, resources, and support. It qualifies you to do business with the VA and gain priority on federal and state government contracts. Tax relief and help building business partnerships is also available.
Warrior Rising
A Utah-based non-profit that helps veterans fund and start their businesses. Founded by Green Beret Jason Van Camp, Warrior Rising provides partnerships, mentoring, and economic assistance. They support veteran entrepreneurs and encourage the hiring of fellow veterans.
SCORE Association
SCORE’s network of volunteer business mentors supports business leaders for all backgrounds. They offer special resources aimed at veterans including guidance on funding, corporate transition, and entrepreneurship
